How do they know that you're an American?
It has happened to me only once -- in America.

Rental Car Company asks me when signing the contract whether I want to have the charge in my local currency. Later I read the small print and find out they charge much more in commission than my credit card company would have. And the best part: "ONCE AGREED, THE CURRENCY CANNOT BE CHANGED AGAIN", so there is no way to reverse this when returning the car.

Scam made in America (by Avis).
