I usually check the seat map before leaving for the airport (did so, before CoachChoice, to get a feel for the seating), and I'm seeing a lot of C$ and E$ seats unfilled, 2.0-1.5 hours pre-flight. If you don't have a seat assigned, and there's nothing but C$/E$ available, sounds like you're getting the seat for free anyway... that, and people probably hitting the GAs 30 minutes prior...
