Would they have turned around quicker if people started complaining that they were feeling ill?
Well not much they could do because 1-2 hrs out they would have been overflying Southern China and it would be a nightmare if they landed in the Mainland. HKG was the most sensible option, and obviously you don't just get there, it takes time.
