So the aircraft turned back after 2 hours, and not 4 as reported above by OP.
2 hrs out of HKG to LHR would be right in the middle of China, with its ridiculously restricted airspace and likely, a huge number of visitors without proper visas.

Sounds like an awful flight, though.
