As I said Hertz and other US majors were out of cars except in very high classes, so I booked a standard with Europcar. My plat MC had told me they would cover CDW but that the rental company could refuse to accept it. At the counter I said I wanted to decline the CDW because MC would cover, would that be OK? Agent said she would have to call to verify coverage, she did and MC confirmed coverage. Whole thing took a minute extra.

I generally reserve the cheapest car and find I usually get upgraded for free here in the US. This time I am glad I did not get anything bigger. I was able to get used to driving on the left pretty easily, but those narrow roads! Yikes.

But what a great trip. Mrs. DennyO and I had so much fun, I can't believe we waited all these years to go there.
