I drive a standard here in the US. BUT, I get an auto in Ireland. Think of it as insurance. Think of it as a cost of traveling to Europe. One less thing to think about, and in Irish traffic, particularily Irish country roads, its huge. Looking in your upper left for the mirror added to driving on the left, is challenging enough without shifting with your left hand. I am in Ireland about twice a year for the last 25 years.
I use Avis all the time everywhere BUT Ireland where Hertz is always cheaper, at least in my experience.
And by the way, doesn't matter what your credit cards say, TAKE THE CDW.
