Try Il Borro, a "private estate village" in central Tuscany a little over an hour by car from Florence.

It is owned and managed by the Ferragamo family, of luggage and shoe fame. Vineyards, winery, tastings, shuttles to outlying area town bistros, olive gardens, horseback riding, fishing, Tuscan cooking lessons, fine dining. It is an amazing place and we have friends that rave about it. We have a 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment in Poggio Farmhouse next weekend thru April 8th for 1350 Euros, which is right up your alley.

Keep in mind that they rent Sat-to-Sat, although we booked 6 months in advance for this low season and they accomodated us for Fri-Fri. Email works great with them. Leonardo is a wonderful person to deal with there.

It is an amazing place to base day tours out of with your own rental car, and a great place to just plain RELAX! It can really take the crapshoot out of the "What am I really getting?" that some of these "villa rental" agencies can get you into.
