I've had no experience with American Airlines applying anything like DL's "Journey Control" for award travel. This leads me to believe that "Journey Control"-type limitations do not apply to AAdvantage award tickets.

With AA, if the segment has seats in the award inventory classes and the other AAward rules are abided by, Journey Control-type limitations don't come into play. .... and I've really played around with AA and BA awards.

It's already difficult for me to get the award space I desire; and if it were not for being able to put together award itineraries by looking for and selecting award flights segment by segment, then a good number of my past DL-issued award itineraries are going to be history and difficult to recreate simply for the same O/D.

NW lets me pull together award itineraries segment by segment by segment. And I've put together some convoluted routings since there was no other way to travel the same O/D using NW miles otherwise.

Any evidence of NW applying "Journey Control"-type technology to award tickets? I personally haven't had an incident yet that would confirm that NW applies "Journey Control"-type technology to NW-issued award tickets. NW just seems to care that the flight segments fit the award rules, and I haven't had a problem there yet.
