I think it is partly a feeling of entitlement.

I also believe that these same people don't say "please" and "thank you" in restaurants either. I cringe when I hear people ordering saying "give me a..." instead of "may I have...". So is it a matter of upbringing? Perhaps (and that could get me flamed).
