I've used these, my corporate travel agent gets them from AA and I never have a problem getting them from the TA for a business trip. (I have a feeling most of the other people in my department fly VS...)

And yes, the purchased fare needs to be "J" (I don't think even "D" qualifies), but of course our corporate J fare is significantly less than the "published" fare.

But the other hook is that these upgrades book into "X" inventory, which is more restricted than "A" and of course only viewable on ExpertFlyer or the like.

You could try trading them on coupon connection, but I don't know if you'll get all that much for them.
