This is always the sequence of my trips to the west coast.
1. Arrive at airport
2. get rental car (and ask where the nearest location is)
3. proceed to the nearest in-and-out
My only advice is to get a double-double even if you think that you only want a single burger. It is my opinion that the balance of the ingredients is much better than a regular cheese burger and will give you the full In and Out experience. I would also say that your first experience should be the regular Double-Double. When you sneak away from your wife later in the trip to go back you can get Animal style or another variation.
