No, what they are saying is that they first redeemed 50k points for their award then called GI to make the booking. You can do this through the ThankYouNetwork.com website or the 877 redemption number.
Of course the better way to do things is to call GI first and confirm availability and GI can pull the TY points directly from your account, get the certificate instantaneously, and then ticket the flight. Unfortunately,
coylerj didn't realize this was an option.
