Anybody have luck on the PremierPass Elite companion benefit?

I am going NYC-Las in Jan and found a Delta L class fare non stop both ways for ~$320. I call GI and they tell me the best they can do is AA from EWR with a stop for $600 and change. Is this normal? If so, big thumbs down to GI and that entire companion ticket "benefit"
