I believe it was Kafka's Law of Universal Morality that (paraphrased) has you ask of a given action: If everyone else in the world did this same action, would the world be a better or worse place?
It's called Kant's Categorical Imperative, and that's a pretty fair paraphrase. I heard it condensed even more once--"What if everybody did this?"
