If I was a passenger, I would be more concerned with vehicles picking up this stuff in the tires and bringing it to the flightline where it becomes FOD (foreign object damage sucked into the engine)
I'm sure that must be true at every aiport with the machinery involved. Not only do you see locks, zippers, etc. littering the floor, but also bits and pieces of the doodads people attach to their bags, like ribbons, lace, scraps of fabric, beaded chains, zipper pulls, key chains, etc.
