The best example of the above is where you got OnePass credit for Northwest coded flights on KLM equipment. OnePass did not allow OnePass credit if you bought a KLM ticket. But if you bought a NW ticket on KLM metal, you were okay. Of course it doesn't matter now with the CO/KLM alliance.
