The segment credit rules are clear -- one flight number, one segment. Elite status should be subject to rules as much as everyone else. Treating the "very best customers" well can be done in other ways, such as spending lots of time looking for award seats, paying for a hotel night for a weather delay, 120.20'ing an elite but not others, etc. Subjective things like that, not simple ones like segment credits.
