In all honesty upgrades from DTW to west coast stations are sometimes difficult even for Platinums... genuinely difficult for Silvers. I would not expect to be able to get into F ahead of WP elites without paying for it somehow...
There may be someone with deep pockets that values F at nearly $600 for a five hour flight, but not me. I'll take the upgrade, I may pout when I don't get it but honestly, it ain't worth $600.
And ditto for me on the UG opportunities at the gate. There will be plenty of Plats in the back, so a non Platinum will have slim chances for an upgrade.
