Did you read the CO section on NWA? It looks like some fares won't earn segment credit.

On CSA Czech Airlines-coded, Continental-operated flights: Q, N, V
On Alitalia-coded, Continental-operated flights: A, N, L, O
These may just affect you if you have a NW ticket, with CO metal on it. I don't use segments for 'nuthin, so I'm not real familar with them.
