That's what I am thinking of doing as well. How long was the drive to Ottawa? Did you have any problems with taking a rental car accross the border?

Anyways, here's some more info. Off hours pick up/drop off of the rental car is done by the guys at Purdy Air Service - these are the guys who also fuel the plane when it gets in, so you might have to wait until the flights leaves before getting the rental car.
I took my rent a car and drove it to Ottawa, walked around and drove back - that's how I killed my 10pm-6am layover.
