Virgin will never happen. In fact, I'd argue Virgin will never join any alliance, except, perhaps, Star -- and only if UA fails or sells its rights to use LHR to an airline not in Star.

Virgin joining ST would be great for FF members, but it would impact the traffic going from the US to London -- which currently has to endure Gatwick, a change of planes, or both.
