Thumbs up Booked NW award on Malaysia First Class LAX-KUL-BKK

In an attempt to avoid another lousy flying experience on NW to NRT & BKK, I booked an NW award for the annual Get Away from the Holidays in Dec on Malaysia Airlines in First Class before the milage went up.

Am expecting a stellar flight with a stopover in KUL on the way back from BKK- LAX.

I do hope ST could have had one or two Asian carriers besides KE and MH.

A combination of Taiwanese/ Chinese airlines will strengthen the presence of ST in Asia, especially in China market.

CZ seems to join ST soon, will CI/ BR follow??

the article basically says Malaysia will enter the ST alliance before the end of this year - the news should be announced in the next few days

"les prochains jours" have come and gone - where is the announcement? Note: These talks have been going on for about a year now.

Talking about more Asian carriers in Skyteam:

India's Jet Airways is reportedly in talks with Continental and with United about various relationships as it speeds its transformation from domestic to international carrier. Northwest/KLM may or may not have been of interest to Jet Airways for expanding pre-existing ties, but NW's US hubs don't correspond well with Jet's interest in certain O/D traffic and I am sure NW/KLM don't welcome more competition on routes to India.]

[Continental doesn't fly to India on its own metal and United pulled out of there in September 2001; furthermore, Jet Airways wants to have flights, IIRC, to ORD, EWR and SFO -- which gels well with UA's and/or CO's network.]

As Jet already partners with NW/KLM for mileage accumulation/redemption, Skyteam makes much better sense for a fit.

Still on the fence, apparently

From 23 March Telegraph article interviewing Malaysia's managing director:

"Malaysia Airlines also plans to look into the possibility of joining one of the worldwide alliances, Dato' Ahmad Fuaad says. The airline has been invited to join both Oneworld and Skyteam, two of the most prominent of the leading airline partnerships.

The third of the major airline groupings, the Star Alliance, appears to be off the agenda because two of Malaysia's main competitors are already members.

"The time is right for Malaysia Airlines to join an alliance. It has reached a point where the mega-alliance can provide feed for our development. The other point is, while they previously focused on the revenue side, these alliances are now more interested in cost-reduction measures and such things as joint purchasing," he says.

But so far, although Dato' Ahmad Fuaad and his senior management team clearly recognise that the aviation world is fast moving into the era of mega-airlines and are very aware of the cost savings to be made, they have not yet decided where to direct their membership application."

Hmmmm, if OW can snatch MH, what's ST left with in the region? Garuda, for Christ's sake?

I think MH would do better in Skyteam. With Cathay in OW, it'd be more in competition than with Korean. What's happening with Kenya and Aeroflot? Haven't heard anything in a while.

Aeroflot is still scheduled to join some time by the end of this year (they're being busy preparing code-share agreements with every ST carrier they didn't have one with before

No news re KQ? And what about China Southern? And what happened to Air Europa? And when will anyone finally buy Malev so that they can join, too?

It is now clear that India is on the strategic map of Skyteam carriers. CO has announced non-stop flts on its own metal EWR-DEL. DL, NW are all increasing presence. Jet may not be a real competitor. They have a strong Indian network so could bring a lot more connecting traffic especially if lounges become important in the future upgraded airports.

Air India is tied up the AF, but KL is tied with Jet in combi with NW.

If ST has to make a decision then they should really go for Jet. It is sooo much better then AI/IC. These guys are a nightmare......

Can someone please confirm that SA is really in *A, because it is most certainly not on the *A website.

Looking at the ST from HKG, we really need MH and quick! There is no place we can go from here accept CDG, AMS, TYO. All others have to go on KE, but that is such a long way out.

CZ would also help!
