Clearly something is wrong. If you are waitlisted for Premium Plus and the flight is showing RN3 then 3 people should have been cleared. Time to call UA and have your upgrade request removed and then you need to reapply it online and you will clear immediately into PremPlus and still waitlisted for Polaris.
As for spending an additional $300, nobody knows. You will leapfrog anyone on the upgrade list coming from coach except those sponsored by GS PlusPoints. That could move you a couple of notches up the list or it might not move you up at all. You'll literally be throwing $300 out the window if you don't move up on the list. And given RN3 you could be seated in PremPlus right now for zero additional cost.
