With Galatoires, you want to eat downstairs. (Believe me, you do.) It's the mirrored walls and the atmosphere that makes it special (besides the food of course). Though I haven't been there recently, if you were to show up around 5-6pm, you should be able to get in without reservations. During special events (Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest, etc.), YMMV.
