I have a question for the experts here. I am going to Asia next week and have booked an R fare in Premium. Using GS Plus points and on the upgrade list. Final note, with 4 seats, I realize I will probably die on the list at # 1 (or 2) anyway, but that is a different story....
The only other possibility that comes to mind — but it’s a legitimate one — is a displaced business class passenger. If somebody is booked into J and has IRROPS, and the J cabin is full, they can be put into PE or even Y with higher priority than you’d have — but, to your point, you’re liable to die on the upgrade list one way or another.
