With Amex you can only do a change of date to the same hotel, but if you want to go to another property you also need to cancel and rebook just like with Chase. For both Amex and Chase, they don't claw back your credit if you do that even if it's the next year or half year, if you do an immediate rebooking after you cancel.
i had a clawback when i cancelled to change date. there are other similar DPs online, so things may have changed

Cancelled a stay and the credit was reversed a few days later. I rebooked another edit hotel same day as cancellation so will see if the credit gets reapplied automatically.
