I would give it another try and within the change function select "Cancel this trip...." not "Change this trip." It will give you a "fresh search" but will also retain the existing segment.
Select one-way, enter YYZ-TPE for the same date and search.

Wow, this trick worked!! Thank you! So for 10k more I could add the DCA-IAD into my trip. Now, the cash price for the segment is currently only around $160 which I'd rather save the points and pay by cash. However, if I use points, I do think that it's pretty valuable to have those two legs combined into one ticket so that I don't have to worry as much about any delays or cancellations of the first leg. Plus, I assume I can also check my luggage directly to Taipei from IAD if they're on one ticket, which will save me a lot of hassle for the 10-hour layover in LAX especially I heard there's no luggage storage in LAX. Wondering if you have any input on this? Thanks again!!
