I took the metro from LAX to Norwalk. The bus from TBIT to the station took a while, felt much longer than to the Uber lot. Once there, bought a TAP card (had one at home but didn't bring) using the BART-style machine. Ticket + TAP card cost $3.75 believe. Got off at Norwalk station; Uber'ed home. Was a smooth train ride with normal passengers. This was in the afternoon. Total cost was less than half of Uber from home to LAX. Total time is about doubled.
Not sure if also due to metro opening up, but recent last mile car traffic to LAX have been the fastest I've experienced in the last few years. Usually the last mile takes 30 minutes, now maybe 5min.
That's pretty encouraging actually. Time should be competitive with Uber once the APM is running.
Also, you can put the tap card on your phone... no need to carry the physical card. I haven't used the card in 2 years... just tap the phone and go. Would still be better if they just allow you to tap your credit cards but it is vast improvement already. We are way ahead of some other US cities.
