As far as I can tell, there isn't any extra space in the row 8 seats, and logically it's unlikely given the manufacturing / chassis process for assembling these seats. Sometimes the crew may be using the top area for temporary storage, which may occasionally catch someone's eye when watching the IFE. But I agree with you about the galley/WC noise issue, particularly on a 777, these are not quiet brids, It's the sort of thing that seatguru printed automatically regardless of real world impact.
