My curiosity was over why the A380 was swapped out on December 24th only. Every other day is still on the A380 for QF12. Not a big deal as I got a great discounted biz fare on Amex's travel portal. Price has since doubled for the 787.

Basically QF does this randomly on a day where they can free up an A380 for maintenance and give some slack in the rotation since they no longer have the long layovers in LAX for maintenance everyday. This allows them to schedule maintenance and inspections in SYD.
The flight they did it on was very full in F which was a bit of a mess but after they downgraded me they allowed me to rebook any day I wanted including a day where there was only F inventory left and not A.
