It's common to be asked to remove boots. I'm usually asked to remove my Dr Martens boots when travelling through security. It's fairly common for them to ask me to remove high-top Converse too.

Sometimes they don't notice and I don't have to, but that's really me getting away with it rather than a policy decision.
