As for PIT or Harrisburg just being 2 or so hours away, that's good to know. One of the purposes of this trip is to do a road trip along US-22, like I did with US-44 in New England last October. So I am happy to read that it is a pretty drive. US-44 is a really beautiful road and was a great trip (report to follow in the Trip Reports forum).
There's another small offbeat airport that's closer to Altoona/Hollidaysburg than PIT: Latrobe (PA) off of US 30 (about 30 miles east of downtown Pittsburgh), although it might just have ULCC service to Florida.
