If they charge for a balance inquiry, a work around is to simply add their app to your phone. Then you don't need an ATM to tell you what your checking (or savings or brokerage) balance is.

They don't close your account. They just don't send you a new ATM card.
This happened to me. I only use the Schwab debit card overseas. After Covid, went overseas and discovered my ATM card had expired. They were happy to send me a new one. Just didn't have it for that trip.
