Do you think their system will let me SDC to a nonstop UA-operated flight if P is available? I imagine it's against the rules on paper, but is their system smart enough?
No. The system might allow you to change to SFO-XXX-NRT, where SFO-XXX is in XN and XXX-NRT is in P, but it won’t allow you to change a mixed itinerary to a nonstop at all.

It shouldn’t, really. The ticket shouldn’t validate. Does everything look correct on the NH side, and, critically, do the ticket numbers match your latest receipt?
