If CX's goal is to restrict access to its lounges as much as possible, I don't think they would have a co-branded credit card in HK that allows even CX GREEN members who fly ECONOMY (on CX metal) to use their J & (even) F lounges. And, yet, they do! And this program was only launched within the last few years (post Covid), not something launched a long time ago that they are looking to cancel soon.
Let me offer another perspective: maybe they are trying to get more people to sign up to CX credit card instead to get lounge benefits; also, if you are management, are you not concern with the potential growth of lounge accessible passengers? There are three proposals. 1) Ignore the growth, if push comes to shove have a wait list system and have people line up outside of the lounge and wait (like AMEX lounges for Platinum card members). But that is bad for PR and image and the least likely scenario. 2) Expand lounges to accommodate growth. That is on the table, but the concern is the eligibility growth will outpace the capacity. 3) Do some tweaking that lessens eligibility (so far carries the most momentum, but there's a strong push for option 2 as there's a fear as many have mentioned here that would they lose too many frequent Y flyers).
