Rarely but I have had to complain about something to get it taken off for a night or so. Like if something in my room isn't working properly or the wifi sucks--I am sure you can find something to complain about and see if they bite.
You might have to come right out and ask if you can get some compensation for (insert complaint here). It is getting more and more outrageous with these resort fees.
As far as an upgrade, I would smile sweetly and tell the desk clerk that it is your first time staying there and you are very excited about it and is there any possibility of getting a complimentary upgrade. Sometimes you can schmooze your way into an upgrade plus it depends on how full the hotel is. good luck!
