I won't risk it if no PZ space at booking. That is when EVA, Singapore, or one of the ME carriers gets the cash booking.
If you wait to last minute (i.e., a day or two ahead), and search for economy with PP upgrade, you may be able to find something. I'm having success out of SFO for a trip to Japan. The last-minute economy class fair does increase compared with booking a month or two in advance, but it is still a relatively cheap upgrade when booked last minute. If nothing comes up then I burn a bunch of my > 1 million legacy miles on AA or Delta or BA or AK for a premium cabin seat. I've also seen, but have not bought, some "skip the waitlist" PP upgrade offers at booking, though these devalue the PPs by about 75%.
