For now, that's what you need to do. I'm planning to do the same this weekend, arriving in SIN on UA1 and connecting to an Air Asia flight. In the good ol days, you can just go to transfer desk airside and get your luggage transferred to your next flight, even on LCC like Jetstar or AirAsia. Hopefully that'll come back soon.
