My carry-on bag, the one that's been my go-to bag for more than 2MM, did not fit either wheels-in or handle-in. I've never had an issue with this bag on previous ERJ 175, so I was surprised that it wouldn't fit. The issue, IMO, is the door flat-faced, not curved as shown in the photo above. This meant I had to turn my bag sideways, as did my husband who has a similar style bag, although not identical. The passenger in row 3, also had to turn his bag sideways in order for the door to close. I asked the flight attendant about the bins, and she said they (the crew) were surprised that they could not get their bags in wheels or handles first either. At one point I stood up when the boarding was mostly complete and noticed the flight attendant in the rear of the aircraft was rearranging bags in bins so the door would close. Seems hard to believe such a small item, in this case a door, could have such a negative impact on an otherwise good idea. The new bins do close-up the feel of the cabin, looking towards the rear, but the look is good. One other oddity; over rows 4 and 7, there is a build-out within the luggage bin that prevents you from putting a bag there. Based on an unscientific evaluation of the new bins, I believe there will be fewer storage spaces for roller bags in the first-class section due to the bins being less deep, which will require luggage to be stored sideways and the build-out over row 4/7. I'm hoping this was prototype arrangement and they will "fix" the door issue, which will (should?) allow more bags to be stored wheels-in or -out, as the refurbishment is rolled-out. If the bins on this aircraft are indeed the future standard, passengers sitting in first class with have to swim upstream more often to store and retrieve their bags more often.
Just had my second trip on a SkyWest 175 (N160SY), and the new bins are horrible. I have no clue how an airline could be sold on something without testing them. I use a Luggage-works bag that nearly every pilot has, and it won’t fit, despite previously fitting. Everyone has to turn sideways taking up double the space. Also as mentioned the space above 4c/d no longer accommodate anything larger than a backpack. Such a mess. I would encourage people to write in….they can’t fix it if they don’t know it’s broken.
