Anything else beyond this, you can blame on our airlines and government who constantly state, that more protections = higher fares, and we want cheap fares so let's not have protections. And goverment says OK.
And feel free to take it up with Fair Trading and the relevant NCAT tribunal if you feel you have been shortchanged. Adminstration fee of $60 will apply
(sorry if ths sounds not positive, but I would wish for EU261 to apply here)
- On a more positive note I would suspect the flight is still some time off, so you can contact QF and ask for say a CNS-BNE-SYD, or CNS-MEL-SYD or different date and time, which I would expect based on my experience that QF would happily rebook you to.

thanks for the responses.
My flight is today and I am with other friends that are on the flight in economy, I must take the flight as we are traveling together. I could have taken a VS flight late in the evening but miss some events. I was basing the difference in fares on what they are offering for sale in this itinerary in the next few days.Biz $1,880 vs Economy, $549. I took a screenshot for evidence
Since I live in California, and I purchased the ticket there, depending on the outcome by Qantas, I have the option of suing in small claims court in California, they will argue jurisdiction but I am confident they will loose on that. They will still have to show up and comply with any subpoenas issued. If they loose, they will have to pay what the court determines based on what I can proof. I could try DOT but because it is a local AUS flight they may not be of help. Will see how it goes when I return home. Thanks again
