As a pseudo data point, I am on a K class Latitude version now that involves a connection before the trip over the Atlantic. The domestic connection cleared right away to J but the one I really care about is still waitlisted (more than 3 months out). Per Cow, it is coded HL on that leg.

There's a big difference between "not eligible" (which seems to be a lot of the discussion) and "no upgrades available".

Correct, but as you said, booking something six months out and changing the return after flying the outbound used to be free. It's not likely to be free if you're booked in K.
