Indeed, if you look at this post and others in the Pay-with-Points thread, it seems that this sequence of events is now the standard MO for Amex which a flight purchased with points is cancelled, and it happens over a series of weeks/months -- first a refund for the cash equivalent of the airfare, then a reversal of the cash refund, then a rebate of points used for the original purchase.
