Understanding/Using UA Electronic Travel Certificate(ETC) & Future Flight Credit(FFC)
E-credit needs to be booked by the expiration but you can buy a ticket to fly past that date - any time until the end of the calendar. You can also use it for anyone. If you don't have any plans or know anyone ends that does, you can book a random ticket (should be regular economy, not basic, and should be non refundable) and cancel after a few days you will now get an FFC instead. That will be valid only for the named passenger and for 1 year from booking date (not flight date).
