These flights have always been problematic for stuff like this as long as I can remember. I feel like UA did you a favor. When I’ve booked paid first OGG-HNL-DEN, it was clear to me at booking that I was flying that first let in economy, and from experience also paying for bags.
Hawaiian isn’t a actual *A partner, so things get more complicated.
