I think it's just the really bad attitude of the young lady at front desk that was unexpected given the good reviews the hotel has. We had to ask for the late check out - wasn't even offered. Definitely a training issue here.
We also didn't get a high floor. Unless the hotel consider 6th a high floor.
In Taipei - both the courtyard and aloft we stayed at upgraded us and sent up some desserts/wine for our anniversary - even wishing us when check-in. In fact, courtyard offered a 5pm late checkout.
It is a select service brand, these things are more hit and miss. Unlike places like St Regis, you can't really expect them to look at all of these details. The only time I have been kind of disappointed that they overlooked a birthday, was a Conrad during a two week stay as a Diamond. But for Courtyards etc. I'll be happy when they do notice special days, and accept when they don't.
