As
WineCountryUA said the preferred process is a scan-answer-scan (The question is something along the lines of "Welcome Mr. LincolnJKC. How many people are traveling with you?" and the options, everywhere except the DEN Club Fly, for me, are "Just Me", "+1 Guest" or "+2 Guests") if the guest isn't present with you the agents at the counter may or may not take their name and let them in when they arrive.

If UA was really motivated they could institute something like many of my larger clients around the US [and my wife's employer's] "Guaranteed Ride Home" programs where, in essence, if you carpool or ride public transit and either need to leave early or stay late for some operational reason they'll pay for you to get home via a cab/Uber/etc. as well as covering additional child care, etc. costs -- Encouraging people to make use public transit while preserving the operational flexibility of being able to get to and from work whenever needed.
But of course that would cost money and improve the customer experience, two things UA seems deathly allergic to doing under the current circumstances.
