For now, let's ignore the issues regarding fare class and upcharges. If I were to book SFO-LAS-LAX-SFO (all same day), I believe I might be able to SDC the 1st leg into SFO-LAX-LAS less than 24 hours before departure. Is there any chance I could change the LAS-LAX-SFO return legs into say, LAS-LAX-LAS-SFO, either (1) before 1st departure (obeying the 24-hour rule), (2) after beginning itinerary (I'm not sure why this would be any different than 1), or (3) after arriving in LAX on the return? Has anyone successfully done this? I imagine it would be allowed during IRROPs, but in normal conditions?

Thanks!
Almost no chance. UA used to allow this by creating some very crazy SDC routings like doubling back between SFO & EWR to do SFO-LAX. They got rid of this years ago and are more strict about routing rules during SDC. It'll be basically impossible to do SFO-LAX-LAS-LAX-SFO in the same day given how the ticket is constructed. During IROPS things go out the window but the app may be confused on what routing you're actually on and offer no options forcing a call to United to get it fixed (or an airport representative).
