To be fair, I think there is a distinction between checking size and checking weight. It is pretty easy to know the size when you buy the bag. But weight will change on every flight and I would be willing to wager that a large percentage of people with a suitcase are over 8 kg, and considering that this limit is 20% less than Ryanair's and nearly 50% less than EasyJet's, I think it is quite reasonable to think that many people would not realise their bags are overweight.

To me, setting a weight limit for even the most expensive economy fare that is lower than what EasyJet or Ryanair or Wizz can give the people on the cheapest fares seems like a stingy money grab to me. And I would say that if my hand luggage started regularly being weighed against that 8kg limit, the premium I would be willing to pay for Aegean economy would go down considerably.
