We decided not to fight this battle on our ATH-JTR (as we had already had to visit the counter to check a bag) and the agent gladly checked all 5 bags with no BS this time regarding an overweight fee. Of course we saw many people boarding with 22” that were identical to the ones we checked.

Thankfully the luggage did not get lost in the bowels of ATH but this would be higher risk for a connection. I am not sure what we will do for JMK-ATH-FRA. Instinct says roll the dice

if US airlines did this I would probably fly much less. I have saved 100s of hours over decades of flying plus avoided the problems of delayed and lost luggage. The “weight limits” are a joke as US carriers routinely pack their bins with no weight limits.

I have never seen any “madness” just occasional customers boarding in the last group who are forced to gate check. As it should be.
