You need a valid passport to travel. If by doing an online application, your current passport is cancelled, don’t think you’d be able to enter/leave the country. Or your destination/departure point for that matter.
I forgot to mention I have 2 other passports that I could use to enter other countries. I only need a US passport to reenter the US
